Concert Series at a Great Rate

Attention Fort Myers Beach dwellers: There are four concerts remaining in The Fine and Performing Arts Concert Series at the Shell Point Retirement Community.

These include:

Ensemble Galilei Friday, March 12th
Contiguglia Brothers Thursday, April 8th

The last four concerts will be offered at a special rate of $35 each or all four for $120 (a $20 savings).

CMCS Shrimp Festival Sailboat Race

The Shrimp Festival sailboat race (hosted by the Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society) is coming to Fort Myers Beach on March 13th.

Three buoy races are to be run starting at 10am. Also, be sure to attend the shrimp boil social at the Cape Coral Yacht Club afterward, reservations required.

Algenol Comes to Lee County

Great news for Fort Myers Beach & the surrounding areas: Algenol is relocating their administrative offices & bio labs to Lee County.

"Algenol is a fully integrated biofuels company using direct algae-to-ethanol technology to product transportation fuel and alternative green-based chemicals."

This will provide an initial 120 jobs within the next several years, among other benefits to the community, such as attracting like-minded businesses & scientists in the field. Algenol will also be forming a partnership with FGCU to establish research programs for students pursuing careers in the field.

Winning Kids Club is preparing to house Haitian orphans
The Winning Kids Club is a nonprofit charity organization that assists local disadvantaged and disabled children living in Lee or Charlotte counties, but according to president Gail Ghigna-Hallas, the group’s focus is switching exclusively to caring for up to 10 Haitian children ranging from infants to 5 year olds. Coral Ridge Cemetery to hold vigil for victims of earthquake
Coral Ridge Cemetery is hosting a vigil today for the people killed in the Haitian earthquake. Starting at 5:30 .pm., the vigil is open to the public. Those attending are being encouraged to bring donations of food, clothing, water and money to help those in need. Read full article here>>

FBC gives $1 per blood donor toward Haitian Relief Fund
For everyone who attempts to donate blood between Saturday, Jan. 16 through Monday, Jan. 25, FBC will donate $1 to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. FBC is also donating more than 1,000 bottles of water to relief efforts. Read full article here>>

Ladies Fishing Tournament Coming to Fort Myers Beach

1st Annual Chix-N-Stix Ladies Tournament is coming to Fort Myers Beach Dec 4th through the 5th.

Check-in at 5pm, Friday, December 4th which includes a goody bag for the ladies. Following that is the anglers' meeting at 7pm. The real fun begins on Saturday the 5th at 7am with an end time of 3pm when all teams will meet back at the Fish-Tale Marina with their fish for a weigh-in.

Whitney March, with the School of Saltwater Fishing show, will be filming on site.

The Weigh Station will be packed to the gills with vendors, spectators, media, anglers & even a masseuse for those tired hands starting at 2pm until Bahama Breeze Island Grille opens the bar at 5pm.

The awards dinner will be at 7pm at Fish-Tale Marina. Bahama Breeze will provide an open bar specializing in Martini's. The winners will be determined & the top 5 teams will be awarded cash, prizes & trophies. Even more prizes will be awarded in the fun & youth divisions.

The Holiday Inn across from the Fish-Tale Marina has special tournament rates of $79/night available. Just tell them you are with CNS!

A Tale of Two Trolleys

This News Press article on the Naples & Fort Myers Beach trolleys caught my eye & I wanted to make sure you are all aware of the Fort Myers Beach trolley as it is a fun & frugal way of traveling about our area. At $31 dollars for a month pass, it's hard to beat! (Per ride the cost is $0.50.)

Interviews with regular passengers show how convenient the trolley truly is to locals and visitors alike: Cornelius murphy, a Bonita Springs local, takes the trolley into Fort Myers Beach to work, while vacationers, Ted and Donna, didn't even have to rent a car for their visit.

We would like to extend our congratulations to the Lions Club of Fort Myers Beach Under-18 soccer team! They recently scored the Under-18 Boys Championship soccer title by defeating the club from San Carlos Park. Way to go Fort Myers Beach team!

Jazz at the Roadhouse Cafe and Piano Bar

One of the recommended attractions near Fort Myers Beach is the Roadhouse Cafe and Piano Bar, which is owned by Sherri Colombo-Neely & her husband Marc. It has been compared to a supper club of the '50's due to the nightly musical fare & relaxed atmosphere.

It was modeled after the original Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis, Cape Cod and stays true to the original's deliciously eclectic menu.

Beyond typical dining, patrons can dine in "The Cave", a cave-like dining room that seats 6 as well as in the Wine Room which seats 23-25 people for all sorts of events and parties.

According to Sherri, ""The biggest compliment we get is when someone tells us they feel like they've been invited in our home," Sherri said. "People have told us upon stepping into our restaurant, they feel like they're in Chicago or New York City, and they actually make a night here, coming in for dinner, then enjoying some drinks and live jazz music. We just want people to come in, relax, and have a nice night out."

Fort Myers Beach Fire Station Wins Award

The 2009 Summit Award went to Fowler Construction and Development for their work on the design of Fort Myers Beach Station #32.

The project was a collaboration among the district, the planning team - Gora McHahey Architectural Firm - and Fowler Construction.

The building design serves as both fire protection and Advanced Life Support transport. Beyond that it is also a command and operation center during disasters or storms.

The fire district has been serving Fort Myers Beach for 60 years, since 1949.

Pirate Festival on Fort Myers Beach

The fourth annual Pirate Festival was held recently on Fort Myers Beach. Guests were treated to a live black-powder demonstration, a ship-to-shore-battle, belly dancing and swashbuckling galore. Authentic food was served aplenty, as well as live music & treasures for sale.

It looks like service for boats & yachts on Fort Myers Beach is about to improve in the near future:

"Diversified Yacht Services has purchased 2.5 acres of waterfront on San Carlos Island, near Fort Myers Beach, to expand its yacht and boat repair business."

Also, "The company's services include... 'pretty much the whole gauntlet for any sized boat'. "

30 Year Fixed Mortgage Interest Rates are Below 5 Percent

There is no better time to purchase real estate on Fort Myers Beach.

According to Free Rate Update, their research "shows current 30 year fixed mortgage interest rates as low as 4.875% available with zero buy down points" as of August 31 ,2009.

And rates have indeed fallen further as Bank Rate is showing 30 year fixed rates to be 4.250% currently.
